In this blog I will explain how I feel about SEO in 2015.
So lets get this out of the way to start with, I am not an SEO expert. This is just a personal view from my own experiences and information I have picked up from podcasts and other blogs.
SEO is a real dark art to me, and I don't mean that to sound negative but as in Its one area I have not spent as much time on as I maybe should have. The reason is quite simple, nobody really knows what works exactly and even if you do find that something is working today Google have the power to take it away in a heart beat. Paying for something that comes with no guarantee no promise of results and any results you do achieve could change any minute is daunting for me.
Ranking number 1 on Google for your keywords is great but knowing that every competitor is also doing the same thing leads to me think that this is just driving up cost? Maybe not?
Do I want to rank higher for certain phrases and keywords- yes without a doubt. I think today I believe that knowing how Google works is the best place to start. It is not about who gets the most clicks or who pays the most. Google uses lots of factors to determine what it deems more relevant and contextual to that individual and there search term. The main factor for me though is that Google wants to provide the right content that is going to help that person the most.
Doing the basic things like thinking about your keywords and phrases before writing content and all other things like your meta description and title are easy to do and will only help and do good. Personally I write for people and do not pay too much attention to how it might rank. This is why I am not ranking as well as I would like.
I think the most important factor to consider is how SEO might affect your business? If by ranking higher you earn more money and high enough that any money spent on SEO is worthwhile then its a no brainer.
For most small business owners with little or no budget I really do not think SEO is something that you should be worrying about now unless you are in the eCommerce business or peoples searches are the main trigger for a purchases from you.
I could be very wrong, but I believe for me personally I could put a little more effort into SEO to rank a little better but with the power of social media a great email list and the amazing targeting that can be done on paid social I think it might be better time and money spent?
Would love to be told I am wrong and some examples of why SEO is something I should be thinking and worrying about. Let me know your thoughts?
