In this blog I am going to explore my thoughts on mobile websites after a fascinating event I attended this evening in London by IAdigital an fast growing agency from Bournemouth.
The even was based around the 7 deadly sins of mobile and was generally around mobile websites and a little conversation on mobile apps.
The 7 deadly sins were:
1) A desktop site on a mobile device.
2) Pop ups
3) Slow loading time
4) Poor navigation and buttons
5) Poorly designed forms
6) No Click to Call
7) Captchas
The event itself was most entertaining and done in a TV game show style with games that demonstrated frustration in many websites and how they display on a mobile device.
For example there was a game of captcha getting volunteers to try and read some of these in a short space of time. Fat fingers was another trying to complete basic tasks with fiddly little balls using massive finger pointing gloves. The most effective game to demonstrate these mishaps was a simple game of recalling a long number and writing it down on another page across the room. Quite a simple concept but nobody got it right and it highlighted the lack of click to call on many websites.
For me the question that came to mind is should we be designing mobile sites that are then responsive to the desktop? The presentation had a slide that clearly showed that mobile is where the trend is going and already surpassed desktops in terms of primary device websites are viewed on.
I don't really like the term responsive to be honest. It's not enough today to have a responsive site. The term site sticks a bit too as it sounds static?
Your website should be smart, intelligent, listening and building relationships. Yes it should be alive and a gateway to your company.
Dave McRobbie one of the directors had the line of the night for me he talked about the misuse of the word conversion and how that is like changing somebody's mind. He suggested the term goals or tasks instead which is of course much more fitting.
I have a similar feeling about the word close! Closing a sale is negative to me, it should be starting a relationship.
And this is what I really got about the event tonight it was both in terms of mobile how to start a relationship and conversation by creating a compelling and positive experience and also in person by attending these great events, meeting great new people and seeing how putting a group of likeminded people in a room can spark some amazing journeys.
On the subject of mobile I managed to write and publish this blog all from my mobile phone and on a train over 3G. Not bad really what can be achieved when the device and software work together.
